The Rage Over Resources
Where water is often found so abundantly in North America, the same cannot be said in South America. In Brazil, a major water irrigation project is underway to build two new canals from the Sao Francisco. The new canals would provide water for over twelve million people in the South of Brazil whose water is often received by truck as rain comes so infrequently. This spread of the country's only water resources would provide help to many farmers and expansion of the country's agricultural resources. However, there are raging debates over the new irrigation project as the country divides. The South feels the irrigation project is much needed for profitable agricultural projects but the North feels that the project can not be completed without consequences to their crops and energy resources. Northern Brazil feels the creation of canals from the Sao Francisco will threaten the generation of hydroelectric resources as well as many who depend on it for agriculture. As Brazil continues to debate over this expensive project, a larger divide between the North and the South of Brazil is being noticed. With the raging fight over so much water, it often makes one think about the amount of water often wasted daily in North America. Water that could possibly end such futile arguments in one government.
